26 [30] Qui conviene ricordare la sua Somma Teologica, che respira pietà e sapienza insieme;

4 Is quidem, saeculo decimo secundo exeunte, Lauingae in Suevia, in Augustana dioecesi, ex familia militaribus rebus addicta, ortum habuit.
13 Quamquam iam senio confectus, ad secundum Lugdunense Concilium accessit, in quo Graeci, emissa fidei professione, doctorum expositionibus praemissis, divina gratia ad unionem Ecclesiae feliciter redierunt. Eius etiam Concilii occasione Praedecessor Köster Beatus Gregorius Pp. X, Alberto intercedente, Bodulphi de Habsburgo, Eomanorum Eegis, electionem probavit. Qua re Albertum utrique ordini societati» tum ecclesiasticae tum civilis denuo consuluisse procul dubio affirmari potest.
26 [30] Hic recolere praestat eius Summam Theologicam, quae pietatem ac sapientiam pariter redolet;
At post tanti luminis occasum numquam tamen eiusdem splendidus fulgor defecit.
Praeterea Pius IX toti archidioecesi Coloniensi anno millesimo octingentesimo quinquagesimo sexto sub ritu semiduplici huiusmodi festum, postea anno millesimo octingentesimo septuagesimo ad ritum duplicem elevatum, celebrari permisit.
38 Itaque rem totam SS.
40 Datum Romae, apud Sanctum Petrum, anno Domini millesimo nongentesimo trigesimo primo, die decima sexta mensis Decembris, Pontificatus Nostri anno decimo.

THE VENERATION OF ST. ALBERT THE GREAT, O.P., CONFESSOR AND BISHOP, IS COMMANDED FOR THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH, WITH THE TITLE OF DOCTOR ADDED. PIUS, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THIS MATTER
1 "In the treasures of wisdom are understanding and the knowledge of religion held." For this reason Solomon also sets forth in illuminated words the most profound reason why he himself sought the possession of wisdom from God, namely because wisdom itself intimately joins the soul with God, and surpasses and excels all good things. In an even broader and clearer manner from this union of the perfect life and likewise the pursuit of wisdom, the hearts of the faithful are lifted upward, as those who are "instructed in charity and in all the riches of the fullness of understanding, in the knowledge of the mystery of God the Father and of Christ Jesus, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."
2 Therefore, the more one advances toward God through wisdom, the more he elevates the dominion of the spirit within himself; for wisdom "is the teacher of the discipline of God, and the chooser of his works." But man approaches the exemplar of Divine Wisdom the more closely the more he imitates the example of the Saviour in both living and acting, who declared: "Whosoever shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
3 Following these footsteps of Our Lord Jesus Christ, there shone forth with most brilliant glory that Albert, a student of the Order of Preachers, a master in theology, formerly Bishop of Regensburg, who, joining in a wondrous manner the ways of contemplative and active life, appeared truly great to the men of his age and to posterity, and who on account of the eminence of his doctrine and his manifold knowledge of all things was distinguished by the surname of the Great.
4 He indeed, at the end of the twelfth century, had his origin in Lauingen in Swabia, in the diocese of Augsburg, from a family devoted to military affairs. Departing from his native soil for the sake of perfecting his studies, he proceeded to Italy, that he might apply himself diligently at Padua to the liberal disciplines, medicine, and the natural sciences. There he came to know and love the nascent Order of Preachers, which, having overcome the reluctance of his uncle, at the urging of the Blessed Jordan of Saxony, Master General of the same Order and most fervent herald of Jesus Christ, he embraced, and was enrolled among the sons of St. Dominic. Devoted to God in all things and shining forth with tender devotion toward the Blessed Virgin, Albert was soon sent to Cologne to pursue theological studies. At that time, applying himself to the purification of his soul and the cultivation of his intellect, advancing from virtue to virtue, he devoted himself intensely, like a giant running his course. Preceding study with prayer, he so disposed his intellect and his entire manner of life that, as a member of the apostolic religion of the Preachers, he might become suitable for preaching and the salvation of souls. Thus, keeping watch at the doors of wisdom, he so excelled among his peers that he easily grasped the heights of all secular sciences and "drew from the fountain of divine law such salutary streams of doctrine that the fullness thereof flourished in his breast," as Our Predecessor Alexander IV did not hesitate to assert of him. Raised to the priesthood, that he might transmit to others the lights and treasures of contemplation and learning, Albert was first appointed lector at Hildesheim, Freiburg, Regensburg, and Strasbourg. He soon acquired incredible reputation throughout all lands, when he held the chair of sacred faculty in the celebrated University of Paris with the highest acclaim and was honored with the mastership of theology. Afterwards Albert continued to instruct the minds of youths at Cologne, where by the command of his Superiors he founded and directed the General Study of his Order.
5 At that time, among many other celebrated men, he had as his most celebrated disciple Thomas Aquinas, whose most distinguished genius he himself first perceived and proclaimed, and with whom he remained most friendly throughout his life in the emulation of holiness and studies; and when the latter had been taken from the living, he strenuously defended the purity of his doctrine and worthily celebrated the loftiness of his mind.
6 Since moreover Albert was renowned among all for the virtues of prudence and justice, it is no wonder that he was frequently chosen as arbiter in public and private questions and disputes, which he always settled with the most correct sense of equity and with remarkable skill and fortitude. But his wonderful diligence in conducting affairs, joined to devotion to religious observance and love of Christian perfection, was the reason why the Preachers of Germany, gathered in their provincial chapter in the city of Worms, placing their hope in him, designated Albert as provincial prior by their votes.
7 The capitular Fathers well knew that the vanity of the age, on account of the circumstances of things and times, had gradually crept in even among the cloistered men, so that there was need of a man of holy heart, firm will, prudent counsel, and endowed with every virtue to govern them in the preservation of the perfect life. Their hope was not disappointed. For Albert gave untiring and most abundant effort, so that he might most diligently discharge the office of Prior of the Teutonic province, which extended most widely from the shores of Ireland through Germany to Poland and Hungary: and he was accustomed not only to visit the monasteries frequently, but also to hold assemblies, so that by his example and word he might spur his subjects to follow the path of virtue and regular observance, imitating in a sublime manner the example of the Divine Master, who "began to do and to teach."
8 The prudence of the most blessed Albert in conducting affairs and his skill in civil matters and the fame of his learning and holiness reached the Roman Pontiffs themselves, who did not hesitate to entrust him with grave and distinguished offices.
9 It is worthy of special mention that by Pope Alexander IV it was entrusted to Albert himself, provincial Prior, that together with his brethren he should vigorously render aid in the defense and propagation of the Catholic religion among the pagans of Livonia and Prussia. And indeed Alexander entrusted other duties to him in the region of Brandenburg. Since he, appointed by his Order, had to vindicate the cause of the mendicant religious and likewise the rights of the Apostolic See, he proceeded to the Pontifical Curia, then residing at Anagni, where in consistory he repelled the assault of adversaries and moved minds with such brilliant learning, that not only, obeying the Pontiff's command, did he refute the errors of the Averroists in public disputation, but also most clearly expounded the Gospel according to John in the school of the Pontifical Curia.
10 Albert left such a memory of his wonderful learning and most brilliant virtue even in the Roman Curia itself, that the same Supreme Pontiff Alexander IV, when a new pastor was to be appointed to the Church of Regensburg, which was then in many ways deformed in spiritual and temporal matters, chose Albert the Great, who might feed and govern the flock committed to him by learning and example and relieve the episcopal see burdened by debt. Remaining in episcopal dignity, Albert observed poverty all the more willingly, as he recognized it to be most efficacious for restoring ecclesiastical discipline and reforming morals. With inexhaustible love of study and contemplation wholly retained, the holy prelate was untiring in eradicating vices, diligent in raising up fallen morals, discreet in settling disputes, most careful in administering the Sacraments, and did not cease from sacred writing, so that at the same time he might advance learning and provide for the flock entrusted to him. Having obtained the abdication of the Bishopric of Regensburg, which he had earnestly sought from Pope Urban IV, at the nod of the Supreme Pontiff himself, he soon applied his efforts and by the authority of the Apostolic See was appointed Preacher of the Cross through Alemannia and Bohemia for collecting subsidies for the Holy Land. Having most excellently discharged this office, he willingly returned to the regular custom of his Order, and spent the remaining years of his life in preaching, teaching, and writing, and through many dioceses, wherever requested, he fulfilled pontifical rites and other episcopal duties, so that, undertaking most difficult journeys, he went into various regions, and to different cities also, namely Nijmegen, Antwerp, Basel and others for the sake of religion and piety, and after he had stayed at Strasbourg and Würzburg, he returned to Cologne, where his final rest was to come to him.
11 Impelled by special affection toward religious of both sexes, he exercised great care for them and visited their convents and monasteries often at the mandate of bishops with great benefit to religious discipline, kindling everywhere the ardor of holiness and the light of contemplation. Moreover, he extended the devoted offices of piety and religion for promoting it abundantly to all the Christian faithful, denying counsel or aid to none. Nor should it be passed over that Albert himself lived in harmony of piety with St. Louis, King of the French.
12 Although Albert was usually called Lord out of reverence, yet he showed himself rather as a father to all, turning filial trust toward himself, according to the example of the Apostle Paul, who most willingly spent himself and was spent for the souls of his neighbors.
13 Although already worn down by age, he attended the Second Council of Lyons, in which the Greeks, having sent forth a profession of faith, with the expositions of the doctors set forth beforehand, by divine grace happily returned to the unity of the Church. Also on the occasion of that Council, his Predecessor the Blessed Pope Gregory X, Albert interceding, approved the election of Rudolph of Habsburg, King of the Romans. By this matter it can certainly be affirmed that Albert had again consulted for both orders of society, both ecclesiastical and civil.
14 Yet truly this immense mass of business which we have examined seems to be of little account, as it were, if it be compared with the great labors of studies undertaken and the volumes most learnedly written by the same man, in which the acuteness of his genius and extraordinary force, the amplitude and depth of his mind, the rich abundance of his erudition, and his unflagging zeal for adorning and defending the faith shine forth eminently.
15 Wherefore historians and the writers of his life justly and deservedly extol him on account of the singular universality of his intellect, who not only contemplated divine matters or philosophical truths, but also touched upon and illuminated all other human sciences, which are called natural sciences today. Already Bartholomaeus of Lucca, his contemporary, bishop of Torcello, affirmed that Albert, as far as the cultivation of all sciences and the method of teaching are concerned, excelled most among doctors. And indeed, when one inspects the titles of Albert the Great's almost innumerable works, it becomes suddenly evident that no particular science escaped his genius, since he discoursed most lucidly on astronomy, cosmography, meteorology, climatology, physics, mechanics, architecture, chemistry, mineralogy, anthropology, zoology, and botany. To these writings, moreover, are to be added various works on practical arts, such as on the skill of weaving, navigation, and likewise on agriculture and similar matters. With constant intention of mind, Albert the Great, as a true Catholic doctor, does not stop in the contemplation of this visible world, as frequently happens to modern investigators of natural things; but he ascends to spiritual and supernatural matters, establishing a harmonious coordination of all sciences, yet variously subordinated according to their subjects, proceeding wonderfully from inanimate things to living things, from living things to spiritual creatures, from spirits to God.
16 1 Cor., XII, 15.
17 [21] And in truth God himself, the most munificent Giver of all good things, had enriched Albert with the natural gifts and necessary aids for accomplishing so great a work. For there was in him an insatiable desire for truth, unflagging attention to natural things and their investigation, a fervent imagination together with a firm memory, love for the monuments of ancient wisdom, and especially a religious mind by which the admirable wisdom of God, shining forth in the very creatures, is clearly perceived. Whence the sacred Psalmist invited all the elements of the world to the praise of God, and in Job as well as in the book of Wisdom and in Ecclesiasticus the Holy Spirit impels men to bless and exalt the most munificent Bestower of such good things.
18 [22] This, however, is especially worthy of mention, that he collected with most laborious study every flower of ancient wisdom, and whatever truth human reason by its innate force had acutely investigated, having purged away errors, he subtly pondered, and often happily employed it to illustrate the truth of faith and to defend it from various attacks. This aid he drew most aptly especially from the works of Aristotle, which at that time began to be more widely published in Europe. For, rejecting false interpretations of Aristotelianism, he not only repelled the danger threatening Catholic doctrine, but, as it were, snatched the weapon of ancient philosophy from the hands of enemies and powerfully turned it to the defense of revealed truth. Therefore, under his auspices especially, Scholasticism, with the genuine treasures of sounder Aristotelianism added to itself, entered upon a more expeditious path which would illustrate with greater light the admirable coherence of right reason with faith that exists. With Albert going before, Thomas Aquinas then, his beloved disciple, with happy boldness ascended the enduring heights of philosophy and the loftiest summits of sacred Theology.
19 [23] And so through his labor and work, philosophy as a whole, but especially Aristotelian philosophy, became a valid and most suitable instrument of Christian Theology under the light of supernatural revelation.
20 [24] For this was the supreme and constant purpose of Albert's entire intellectual life; wherefore whatever truth, whatever beauty, whatever sublimity is found in the wisdom of the pagans, he wished to learn and to offer and as it were to consecrate to the Creator himself, who is the first Truth, the supreme Beauty, and essential Perfection. And thus Albert broke the bonds by which natural science was held in the power of the gentiles, Mohammedans, and Jews, or was regarded by some pious men of that time with a certain distrust on account of abuses that had crept in, as though it concealed a great danger for the faithful within itself. A true Theologian feared no harm in the works of nature or of natural reason rightly investigated, since they themselves bear the light of the Creator.
21 [25] Thus among the Doctors of the Middle Ages, especially Albert enriched the schools of his time with the riches of the scientific culture of the ancients in a truly organic manner through his great encyclopedia, which extends from the lowest notions all the way to sacred Theology. It is no wonder, therefore, that among the ancients it was established that Albert "knew all that is knowable, and was ignorant of no branch of doctrine" (Pius II) "and could rightly be called the wonder and marvel of his age" (Ulricus of Argentina). It is no wonder either that the same Albert obtained among the ancients the title of "Doctor Universal" and the fame of being "the most illustrious of all philosophers of all Christendom" (Henricus of Hervodia).
22 [26] To these praises, moreover, learned men, even non-Catholics, of our age do not hesitate to add their assent, while they extol in him the greatest investigator of natural things of the entire Middle Ages. From among these, a certain distinguished writer opportunely calls Albert "the most perspicacious pioneer of natural study in the West, who first adapted and joined to Christian religion those sublime fountains of Greek wisdom, who first placed natural history on a par with ecclesiastical doctrine, who first described German natural things by art, who first attempted to reduce the forms of created things to morphological principles, and finally who first and alone explained the history of all nature through all its parts" (Charles Jessen).
23 [27] Furthermore, he claimed for himself this honor, that scarcely any other doctor, except St. Thomas, existed in philosophy or in Theology or in the interpretation of Scripture who acquired such great authority for himself. It would indeed be far too long to set forth and explain the merits of Albert the Great for the advancement of theological science.
24 [28] For his own mind impelled him to labor in Theology. The authority which he had acquired for himself in philosophical matters he increased in a wonderful way, since, as we have said, he used philosophy as an instrument for rightly explaining Theology in the scholastic system. Wherefore he himself is said to be the principal author of this method of Theology, which in the Church of Christ has remained even to our age as the safest rule and norm for the clergy.
25 [29] The most extensive theological works of blessed Albert, as well as his very clear commentaries on Holy Scripture, reveal not only a most brilliant mind and profound knowledge of Catholic doctrine, but also such sweet piety and a vehement desire to unite souls to Christ, so that without doubt we recognize in these works a Saint discoursing on holy things in the highest degree.
26 [30] It is fitting to recall here his Summa Theologiae, which breathes forth both piety and wisdom;
27 [31] his Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, which shows him to be a learned and reliable interpreter of sacred Scripture; the sweet and pleasant Treatises on the praises of the Blessed Virgin, in which his love and ardent affection toward the Mother of God are revealed; those incomparable writings On the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, in which he clearly shows his sincere faith in God and fervent devotion in honoring the mystery of the divine Incarnation.
28 [32] Finally, his mystical works are to be remembered, from which we find that he was elevated by the grace of the Holy Spirit to the heights of infused contemplation, and from which we see that the fourteenth century in Germany derived from him the norm, principle, and origin of mystical living.
29 [33] All these monuments of Albert's authority in theological science are never to perish. Indeed, with Our Predecessor of blessed memory Leo XIII, we can rightly affirm concerning all the doctrine of Albert the Great: "Although the passage of time has brought many advances to every kind of science since Albert's age, nevertheless his power and abundance of doctrine, which nourished Thomas of Aquinas and was the marvel of their contemporaries, cannot grow old with any antiquity".
30 [34] What we have said thus far may suffice to shadow forth in some measure the greatness both of his remarkable sanctity of life and of the wonderful doctrine of Albert, who, after enduring so many and such great labors in the vineyard of the Lord, having merited exceedingly well of the Catholic Church in every respect, on the fifteenth day of the month of November in the year one thousand two hundred and eighty, most peacefully departed from this pilgrimage to enjoy blessed eternity. But after the setting of so great a light, the splendid radiance of the same has never failed. Albert the Great truly still shines forth in the Church of Christ by the eminence of his knowledge; he shines forth by the sanctity of his life adorned with all virtues; he shines forth also by the fame of miracles performed by him in life and after death, which trustworthy writers assert at all times, so that We too, with St. Peter Canisius, a Doctor of the Church, who calls him the light of Germany, can affirm this of Albert the Great: he was "distinguished by purity of life, wisdom, and sublime sciences"... "The Lord God showed his honor and sanctity through very many miracles".
31 [35] Let no one therefore be surprised that ecclesiastical and public veneration was paid to Blessed Albert after his death, whose manifestations and prerogatives are so numerous and of such great importance. And in this we rejoice, that several of Our Predecessors, "having regard to the distinguished merits of the Blessed Man toward the Church" (Clement X), conferred precious favors toward the extension of his veneration. Innocent VIII namely in the year one thousand four hundred eighty-four benignly granted to the Brethren of the Order of Preachers of Cologne and Regensburg, that they might erect altars in honor of Blessed Albert and perform the liturgical feast; which concession truly amounts to beatification. Gregory XV moreover deigned to bestow this privilege upon the cathedral chapter and clergy of Regensburg in the year one thousand six hundred twenty-two by word of mouth. Urban VIII granted the liturgical feast of Blessed Albert to the city of Louvain in the year one thousand six hundred thirty-one and afterwards, in the year one thousand six hundred thirty-five at the instance of the Roman Emperor, extended it to the Preachers of the whole of Germany. Alexander VII bestowed the same indult upon the Brethren of the same Order dwelling in the Venetian territory in the year one thousand six hundred sixty-four; and finally Clement X, in the year one thousand six hundred seventy benignly assented, that in the whole Order of Preachers the Feast of Blessed Albert the Great with Office and Mass be celebrated in solemn rite yearly in perpetuity. Furthermore Pius IX permitted the whole archdiocese of Cologne in the year one thousand eight hundred fifty-six under the rite of semidouble to celebrate such a feast, afterwards in the year one thousand eight hundred seventy elevated to the rite of double. Three years later the same Pontiff in the church of St. Elizabeth near the former Court of the Biaria, in which a society of Catholic men of the German nation was established in the City, granted that Mass of Blessed Albert the Great be read by priests celebrating there. In these most recent times moreover to other dioceses of Germany, such as Munich, Freising, Freiburg, Regensburg, Augsburg, Würzburg and Rottenburg, and in Gaul to the archdiocese of Paris the liturgical feast of Blessed Albert has been granted. Nor should it be forgotten that a plenary indulgence on his feast has been graciously granted by Our Predecessors here and there, indeed here itself in the City; nor should it be passed over concerning a certain temple at Aachen dedicated in honor of St. Albert, just as also concerning a plenary indulgence in perpetuity for those visiting the same temple from the benign largesse of Leo XIII. Wherefore nothing is surprising, that on account of such excellence of this man's sanctity and learning, his canonization and also the obtaining of the title of Doctor of the Church for him from the Apostolic See has long been considered. Especially indeed after the solemn translation of his sacred body, accomplished in the year one thousand four hundred eighty-three; and again and more earnestly at the beginning of the seventeenth century, it was often strenuously labored for; which however on account of the calamities of wars and the difficulty of correspondence with this Roman Curia could not come to a happy conclusion. Wishing therefore to fulfill a most pious and age-old wish, the Sacred Bishops of Germany, at the time of the Vatican Council, earnestly besought this Apostolic See that the cause of Blessed Albert the Great be resumed; but on account of the known tempests of the Church, whether arising in Italy or in Germany, these prayers could in no way be fulfilled.
32 [36] Again, in solemn manner, in our days the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops and very many Prelates from all parts of the world, together with Abbots and Superiors of religious Sodalities, especially the Universities and Faculties of Studies, Seminaries and colleges, societies of learned men, and the most distinguished men and women of all Catholic Germany in nobility, learning and excellence in the administration of public affairs, have most earnestly presented to Us their suppliant prayers, that We decorate Blessed Albert the Great with the halo of the Saints and the title of Doctor of the Church.
33 [37] We have therefore deemed it fitting to give mature consideration to this matter, which is indeed consonant with Our own wishes, especially since the glorification of Albert the Great appears to be particularly opportune for drawing souls more aptly under the most sweet yoke of Christ. Albert the Great is indeed such a Saint, in whose example our age, earnestly seeking peace and promising itself wonderful things from the discoveries of science, can gaze with intent eyes and to its greatest benefit. For although all peoples today vehemently desire peace, nevertheless they are by no means agreed upon the reason and the way to obtain it: indeed they actually pass over the very foundations of true peace, namely justice and charity. Let all therefore look with confidence to St. Albert the Great. For he clung with all his heart to the most glorious God, who is surely not a God of discord, but of peace, that peace namely which surpassing all understanding keepeth the hearts and minds of the faithful. This Albert, who in his lifetime strenuously labored with happy success to establish the bonds of peace among cities and princes, peoples and individual men, exhibits to us a perfect type as it were of an arbiter of peace, by that authority with which he was endowed for reconciling minds, proceeding from the fame of his doctrine and sanctity together with such dignity of person, ennobled by the sacred character of the priesthood. Indeed he expressed vividly in himself the image of Christ the Saviour, who is saluted in Holy Scripture as the Prince of Peace.
34 Science also conduces in the highest degree to the establishment of peace, if it be subjected to right reason and supernatural faith. This subjection indeed appears necessary for confirming the very nobility, solidity and truth of science in every way. But how frequently in our age especially this subjection is neglected and despised in scientific investigations has been plainly ascertained. Nay, science is even employed against faith and right reason; which science, abandoning God the Lord of sciences, trusting in its own powers alone, undoubtedly falls into that materialism which can never be sufficiently deplored, which, as is hidden from no one, is truly the cause of the dissolution of morals and of so many evils in economic matters, by which almost all the peoples of the whole world are perniciously corrupted and acutely tormented. In Albert the Great, however, the rays of human and divine science meet together in a wonderful manner, and form around him as it were a luminous halo.
35 He by his most illustrious example admonishes all that between science and faith, between truth and goodness, between doctrine and sanctity, there exists no opposition, but rather an intimate cohesion. Thus also, just as St. Jerome from the desert, Albert himself by his most excellent writings as by a mighty voice, cries out forcefully and demonstrates abundantly, that science worthy of the name and faith and a life lived holily from faith can and indeed ought to flourish together in men, since supernatural faith most powerfully communicates the completion and perfection of science. For it is not true, as atheists circulate in our days, that through Christian discipline and the pursuit of Christian perfection the nature of man or the strength of the will is destroyed or broken, or civic activity, or the nobility of human genius; but on the contrary it is shown that grace perfects nature, and unfolds it, elevates it and wonderfully ennobles it.
36 All these things having been maturely weighed, in order that this great Albert might justly and deservedly be honored by all the Christian faithful with the title and honors of Saint, and that he, like a lamp set upon a candlestick, might shine forth with clearer light throughout the whole Church, and thus we might supply what still seemed to be lacking to the glory of this same Albert, Our desire growing day by day, through an equivalent canonization, we have at length deemed it necessary to fulfill.
37 Since therefore our times appear sufficiently mature for so great an event, and since in this matter all the conditions are found which the most ancient usage and law of the Church require in similar circumstances, we have determined to employ a special norm and method, which several of Our Predecessors have already deemed should sometimes be employed for the canonization of other Servants of God.
38 Therefore we have entrusted the whole matter to the Sacred Congregation of Rites; and accordingly our beloved sons, the Most Eminent Cardinals presiding over that same Sacred Congregation, in their ordinary assembly held on the fifteenth day of this month of December, having heard the report of our beloved son Francis Cardinal Ehrle, Relator of the Cause; having considered the investigation conducted ex officio by the Historical Section concerning the sanctity of life of Blessed Albert and the legitimacy of the cult exhibited to him; and likewise the opinion, given in writing and likewise ex officio, by two learned men well versed in the works of that same Blessed one, concerning his doctrine; having also heard the vote of the Officials of that same Sacred Congregation of Rites, all matters having been carefully weighed and maturely discussed, with the unanimous consent of all who were present in considerable number, they judged that they should advise us for the granting of the favour. We, however, on the following day, that is today, having carefully heard the report concerning all these matters presented to us by our beloved son Salvator Natucci, Promoter of the Faith in general, assenting to all things, have deemed the vote of the Sacred Congregation most willingly to be received. By our Supreme Apostolic authority, therefore, we decree that the feast of St. Albert the Great with the Office and Mass of a Confessor Pontiff, with the title of Doctor added, under the rite of a minor double, on his natal day, that is on the fifteenth day of the month of November, shall be celebrated in the whole Church every year. Therefore let most abundant thanks be rendered to the most merciful God, who by the wonderful counsel of his Providence, through our humility before the Church militant, has deigned to perfect the glory of Albert the Great, showing him in our own age especially as "a shining lamp, the light of the whole Church, like the morning star illuminating by its fruitfulness,"* who truly laboured not for himself alone, "but for all who seek the truth." Let therefore St. Albert the Great be present as an intercessor, who from his earliest years seeking wisdom and virtue, willingly bearing the yoke of the Lord, like the Apostle Paul held nothing more sacred than to bring into captivity every understanding unto the obedience of Christ.
39 Therefore, all things which were to be examined having been well weighed, with certain knowledge and by the fullness of Our apostolic authority, We confirm, strengthen, again establish and command all and each of the things which We have said above, and We make known to the whole Catholic Church; commanding that to copies or exemplars of these present letters, even printed ones, subscribed however by the hand of some Apostolic Notary and furnished with a seal, the same faith shall be given entirely as would be given to these Our Letters if they were exhibited or shown. But if anyone shall presume to infringe these Our Letters of declaration, decree, mandate, and will, or with rash daring to act contrary to or attempt them, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Peter and Paul, His Apostles.
40 Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred thirty-one, on the sixteenth day of the month of December, in the tenth year of Our Pontificate.
