ABARIM (Hebrew *har* or *harē hā-'abhārtim*: “the mountain or the mountains of the passages”; so the Vulgate in Deut. 32:49). — A mountain chain in the region of Moab, extending about 100 km along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea, between the Arnon and the mouth of the Jordan as far as Heshbon (cf. St Jerome, *De situ et nominibus locorum hebr.*: PL 23, 867 and 913). The principal peaks are in the north: Nebo (v.), Phasga (Pisgah), and Phogor (Peor), from which the Promised Land was visible. On these mountains Balaam’s oracles were delivered (v.) and the final events of the exodus from Egypt took place (Num. 27:12; 33:47–48; Deut. 32:49; 34:1).
