ABRAHAM of HARRAN (or of CARRHAE), saint. — He was born in the diocese of Cyrrhus around the middle of the 4th century, and as a young man retired to the desert of Chalcis. Later, he moved to a pagan village near Emesa in Lebanon, where he succeeded in converting his persecutors. Against his own wishes to return to solitude, he was consecrated bishop of Harran in Mesopotamia, where he distinguished himself by his austerity. Summoned by Theodosius II to the court of Constantinople, he was received with great demonstrations of esteem. A. died shortly after the year 421.
