He was also a composer, but above all one of the most distinguished theorists of his time; his principal work, *Musica Instrumentalis Deutsch* (various editions from 1528 to 1545), written in German rather than Latin as was customary, in order to facilitate its cultural dissemination, is one of the most important sources on instrumental practice of the period. A champion of evangelical music, he was in contact with Martin Luther.
