AGUILERA, Emmanuel. - A Sicilian Jesuit, born at Licata on 23 Dec. 1677, died at Palermo on 27 Oct. 1740. Professor at Rome of philosophy and later, for fourteen years, of theology, he was recalled to Sicily to write the history of that province, publishing two volumes: Provinciae Siculae S. I. ortus et res gestae ab anno 1546 ad annum 1611, and: ab anno 1612 ad annum 1672 (Palermo 1737-40). A work rich in biographical detail but far removed from any panegyrical tone. Several other publications by him survive, almost all anonymous or pseudonymous; noteworthy are: Lettere del conte Aurelio Rosalbi al sig. Carminio Donzelli, letterato di Salerno (Florence and Palermo 1728), defending the teaching methods of Jesuit colleges, and Examen dissertati (teologiae negantis baptismum infantis in utero, editae a D. Martino Orelli Barnabita (Florence 1710).
