AGUR, son of J. A. — Unknown sage, author of a collection of maxims in Prov. 30. St. Jerome in *Heptateuchos*, identifying him with Solomon, interpreted the two names as symbolic appellations: *«Verba Congregantis (Solomon = he who holds assent, like Qoheleth) son of Vomentis (David)»;* but the true meaning of A. is *«hired»*, while nothing is known of J. A. In the Hebrew text, the following words are attached: *han-massa’ le’It’el u le’Urkal* (cf. Gen. 25, 14), to which Lamuel belonged, author of chapter 31 or its first part. A would therefore be *inamabilita*. In the Masoretic text, the names of two interlocutors of A., *’Ith’el* and *’Urkāl*, follow, which the Vulgate renders: *cum quo et Deus*, and *confortatus*. Moderns see here the beginning of A.’s words and translate: *«I have labored, O God, and come to an end.»*
AGUILERA, Emmanuel. — Sicilian Jesuit, b. at Licata on 23 Dec. 1677, d. at Palermo on 27 Oct. 1740. Professor at Rome of philosophy and later, for fourteen years, of theology, he was recalled to Sicily to write the history of that province, and published two volumes: *Provinciae Siculae S. I. ortus et res gestae ab
