AHILBORN, Augusto Guglielmo Giulio. — Pacifist, born in Hanover in 1796, died in Rome in 1857. A student at the Berlin Academy, he followed the neoclassical manner of Schinkel, demonstrating a particular sensitivity for the grand rhythms and color of the southern landscape, which, from Lake Garda to Sicily, provided him with suitable inspiration. After converting to Catholicism, he also painted Madonnas and Saints based on quattrocento models; when his mind became impaired, he was ultimately forced to abandon painting altogether.
