**ALBADA, Gaggus.** – Dutch statesman and theologian, d. in 1586 or 1588. He studied law at Bourges. In 1561 he was elected assessor to the Supreme Court of the Empire, but resigned in 1570 to accept the position of councillor at Würzburg. In 1576 he retired to Cologne, where he was soon elected deputy of the States of Frisia to the congress that prepared the Pacification of Ghent (8 Nov. 1576). He devoted himself to theological studies and followed Schwenckfeld, whose many works he translated into Latin. He wrote an examination of Beza’s annotations on the New Testament and left a rich collection of letters. The letters to the deputies of Frisia and Leeuwarden (1579–80) were published by Gabbema in Haarlem in 1669. In 1874, E. Friedländer published in Leeuwarden the correspondence of Albada from 1579 to 1584.
