ALBA, JUAN de. - Spanish Carthusian exegete, b. of a noble Madrid family in the first half of the 16th century. Highly proficient in Greek and Hebrew, after receiving his doctoral degree he entered the Charterhouse of Val di Cristo (Valencia), where he made his profession on 2 July 1564. He died, reputedly in holiness, on 27 Dec. 1591.
The annals of the Charterhouse of Val di Cristo describe him as « domus nostrae lux et ornamentum ». After his death, his works were published in Valencia by Filippo Mey: Sacrarum Semiasum, Animadversionum, et Electorum ex utriusque Testamentum lectioe Commentarii et Censura, Valencia 1610 (Venice 1631, Mainz 1675); Selectae Adnotationes et Expositiones in varia utriusque Testamentum difficillima loca, Valencia and Venice 1613; Floridus manipulus divinae Scripturae, in quo permulta difficiliora loca ex amplissima Veteris ac Novi Testamentum serie deprompta, catholice exponuntur, Valencia 1615. His Centuria Sacra has remained unpublished (manuscript of the Charterhouse of Val di Cristo).
