ADOLPH OF ESSEN. - Carthusianascetical writer, b. in the second half of the 14th century. After having studied philosophy, law and theology with distinction at Cologne, in 1378 he entered the charterhouse of Trier, where in the years 1409-1415 he was prior. The chronicles call him vir pius, doctus et sanctus. He died of plague on 4 June 1439, in repute of sanctity. He left several manuscripts in which he described the visions and divine charisms received from heaven, among them the revelation concerning the Rosary.
Being confessor of the b. Margaret, Duchess of Lorraine, he wrote, for the use of the penitent, the following opuscula: De commendatione Rosarii; Vita Servatoris nostri; Exercitium de triplici meditatione; De exercitio remissionis peccatorum. The manuscripts were preserved in the library of the charterhouse of Cologne, before its suppression. He also wrote the Vita B. Margaritae Lotharingiae Ducissae, published in the collection Faragines litterariae, XIV, pp. 399-420.
