The encyclopedia (vol. IV, 1950) counts 29 Doctors; the last, St Anthony of Padua, was declared by Pius XII on 16 January 1946. The years of death are those of its list. Some saints are honoured as Doctors only in one nation or order, such as St Leander of Seville in Spain and St Prosper of Aquitaine among the Lateran Canons; they are not Doctors of the universal Church.
The Fathers of the Church share holiness, orthodoxy and learning with the Doctors, but must also be ancient: see The Fathers of the Church.
