Brief Declaring St. Albert the Great Patron of Students of Natural Sciences
LETTER BY WHICH ST. ALBERT THE GREAT, BISHOP, CONFESSOR AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH, IS DECLARED THE HEAVENLY PATRON OF THOSE WHO CULTIVATE THE NATURAL SCIENCES. PIUS PP. XII
1 To the perpetual memory of the matter. — St. Albert the Great, Bishop, Confessor and Doctor of the Church, striving to ascend to God through knowledge of the nature of things to the praise of God Almighty, who is the fountain of wisdom and the mover, institutor and ruler of nature (Physica. 1. I, tr. 1, c. 1), endeavoured to comprehend all the sciences of his time, whether those pertaining to sacred or to profane matters, and was so marvellously versed in them that he merited to be called by the very writers of his age, astonished at such learning, the Wonder of the World and the Universal Doctor. Indeed, beyond theology, philosophy and the interpretation of Scripture, to which he devoted such study and diligence that very few equalled his knowledge, in order to remove the dissension between Faith and Reason, which certain philosophers at that very time were introducing into the Universities of Studies through their pretended doctrine of a twofold truth, the holy Doctor, since the invisible things of God... are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also and divinity (Rom. 1, 20), pursued the investigation of the things of nature with keen and careful attention from his earliest youth even to extreme old age; and he transmitted his investigations to posterity in most elaborate writings, in which he endeavoured diligently to inquire into the history of almost the whole of nature as known in his time through all its parts by the experimental method, as it is called, or by induction; although from the example and work of so great a Master, on account chiefly of the conditions of that very time and the deficiency of instruments, not all those fruits were reaped which might even then have been hoped for. For if what the great Bishop of Regensburg established concerning the necessity of experiment, concerning keen observation, and concerning the importance of induction for attaining truth in matters of nature, had been rightly understood in his age and brought to effect, those marvellous advances in the sciences in which recent and our own times glory, might perhaps have been discovered many centuries earlier and established with the best advantage to human society. It is no wonder therefore that not only from Italy, but from Germany, France and Hungary, as well as from Belgium and Holland, and also from Spain and America and even from the Philippine Islands, the principal Universities and Catholic Colleges of Studies, together with many professors of physical and natural sciences, now regard Albert the Great as a lamp in a dark world, and desire to have as their own guide and heavenly intercessor him who in his own time, when many were turning their eyes from spiritual things in vain verbal knowledge, taught by his example that one must gradually ascend from earthly to heavenly things, lest in their exact investigation of nature the aid of God Almighty should fail them. Wherefore we willingly and gladly receive the wishes expressed both by the Catholic Academics recently assembled at Trier and by the Universities of Studies and other international societies of sciences, which the Master General of the Order of Friars Preachers has strongly signified to us, adding also his own prayers and the earnest petitions of the Order over which he presides, that we should deign to constitute the same Saint as the heavenly Patron of Cultivators of the Natural Sciences. In the tenth year indeed from the Decretal Letters given on the sixteenth day of December in the year nineteen hundred thirty-one, which our Predecessor of happy memory Pius XI published for the cult of St. Albert the Great, Pontiff and Confessor, with the title of Doctor added, to be enjoined upon the whole Church, it is altogether fitting, as our supreme spiritual office demands, to foster this most opportune undertaking: also on account of the most sorrowful condition of our days; since the progress of sciences in these present times is miserably employed not for the praise of God and the salvation of men but for bringing the calamities of war upon civil regions and cities. St. Albert himself, who in most difficult times showed by his marvellous work that science and faith can vigorously flourish together in men, by his powerful intercession with God, may stir up the hearts and minds of Cultivators of Sciences to the peaceful and right use of nature and of things, whose laws established by God they search out and seek! Having therefore taken counsel on this matter with our Venerable Brother the Bishop of Praeneste, Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, and having maturely weighed all things, by the tenor of these present Letters and from the fullness of our Apostolic power, in perpetuity we declare and constitute St. Albert the Great, Bishop, Confessor and Doctor of the Church, the heavenly Patron before God of Cultivators of the Natural Sciences, with the privileges and honours which are proper to such heavenly patronage added. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary whatsoever. Decreeing that these present Letters shall be firm, valid and effective henceforth and remain so, and shall have and obtain their full and complete effect; and that they shall most fully avail for those to whom they pertain, or may pertain, now and in the future; and thus they are to be rightly judged and defined, and if anything contrary to these matters should happen to be attempted by any authority whatsoever, knowingly or unknowingly, it is from now declared null and void.
2 Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on 16 December 1941, in the third year of Our Pontificate.

LITTERAE SANCTUSALBERTUSMAGNUS , EPISCOPUS CONFESSOR ATQUE ECCLESIAE DOCTOR, CULTORUM SCIENTIARUM NATURALIUM COELESTIS PATRONUS DECLARATUR. PIUS PP. XII
Decimo sane anno a Litteris Decretalibus die xvi m. Decembris an. MCMxxxi datis, quas Decessor Noster rec. mem. Pius Pp.

LETTERE CON CUI SANT'ALBERTO MAGNO, VESCOVO CONFESSORE E DOTTORE DELLA CHIESA, È DICHIARATO PATRONO CELESTE DEI CULTORI DELLE SCIENZE NATURALI. PIO PP. XII
