How we know
- signed in print — the signature printed under the entry, matched to the volume's printed list of contributors.
- read from the page scan — the signature was unreadable in the OCR text and was read from the page image.
- recovered from an earlier OCR reading — the signature appears in an earlier OCR reading of the same page.
- editorial (asterisk) — entries marked with an asterisk, written by the editorial staff.
Method
Coverage. 19,496 of 19,645 entries (99.24%) are attributed; cross-reference stubs ("X: v. Y") are unsigned by design and excluded. The remaining 149 have no legible signature in the scan or were printed unsigned.
Evidence. 18,984 attributions come from the signature in the printed text ●; 1,366 were read from the page scan where the OCR had dropped the small signature line ◐; 864 were recovered from an earlier OCR reading of the page ○; 187 are editorial entries (asterisk). Every name is matched against the contributor list printed at the front of each volume; a reading that matches no listed contributor is not used. 1,136 entries have two or more authors, one per section.
Columns. Printed column numbers are read from each page's running head. Identifiers (Wikidata, VIAF, SBN) are linked only where the match is confident: 468 of 1,665 authors.
