ALBRET, AMANIEU d'. - Cardinal, born in France, died at Casteljaloux, near Bazas, between June and December 1520. Brother of Carlotta, wife of Cesare Borgia, he was the first abbot of the monastery of S. Ruffo in the diocese of Valencia. In 1500, he was created cardinal of S. Niccolò in Carcere by Alexander VI, and in 1507 he became archbishop of Pamplona. In 1502 he was appointed administrator of the church of Oleron, and two years later Julius II granted him the bishopric of Comminges; but Julius II stripped him of his benefices because he adhered to the Council of Pisa. He nevertheless obtained pardon from Leo X, who was notoriously lenient in such matters. Later, he was entrusted with the governorships of the churches of Condom and Lescar. He was a man greedy for honors and pleasures.
