AMMIRATO, Scipione. — Historian, b. at Lecce on 27 Sept. 1531, d. at Florence in 1601; his ancestors, originally from Florence, had moved to Lecce in the retinue of Charles of Anjou. He led an adventurous life and served as secretary to several persons. He took minor orders and finally found peace and tranquil activity in the Florence of Cosimo I. In 1570 Cosimo entrusted him with the task of writing the entire history of Florence, which he narrated in 35 books, from its origins down to the death of Cosimo (1574).
