ANAGNÓSTE (ἈΝΑΓΝΏΣΤΗΣ: «LETTORE»)

ANAGNOSTE (ἀναγνώστης: “reader”). — In the Eastern Church, the anagnoste is the cleric who reads aloud the sacred Scriptures during religious assemblies. In antiquity he could also preach and instruct in Christian doctrine, especially to the young. The rite of elevating a cleric to the rank of anagnoste takes place outside the sacred liturgy.
