**ANASTASIUS**, apostle of the MAGYARS, saint. The personality of A. is still debated. Some identify him with a certain Radla, a Czech, friend of St Adalbert of Prague; others believe him to be a monk of St Alexis in Rome, where he met Adalbert. It is certain that he followed the latter to Prague and was appointed by him as abbot of Breunow. From 995 he lived in Hungary as a missionary and was the first abbot of Martinsberg (1001). Others, however, identify A. with a certain Astrich (Ascharius), who brought the crown from Rome to Hungary for King Stephen (1001), and who later appears as bishop of Hungary at the synod of Frankfurt (1007), at the dedication of Bamberg Cathedral (1012), and in the list of bishops of Kalocsa in Hungary (1015). A. died on 12 Nov. 1036 or 1039. He is not listed in the *Roman Martyrology*, but only in some local martyrologies.
