APOMIRISMO (ΤῸ ἈΠΟΜΌΝΙΣΜΑ)

APOMIRISMO (τὸ ἀπομόνισμα). - It was the act of anointing the body or some diseased part with oil that exuded from the relics or the tomb of certain saints, who were therefore called myroblytes, or with oil from the lamps that burned before some miraculous image, and also with myrrh or chrism that had been consecrated. Since, moreover, the devotion of the Eastern faithful attributes a special blessing, and as it were a kind of consecration, to water that has come into contact with some relic or sacred object (the inner cup of the chalice, the cross, etc.), the custom arose of bathing in II.
