APONIUS. — The biographical data of this writer are lacking; one can only say that he was probably of Eastern origin and that he seems to have written at Rome, in the 5th century (according to some, in the 6th), his Explanatio in Canticum Canticorum in 12 books, composed on the text of the Vulgate. He too perceives in that canticle symbolized not only the mystical union of Jesus Christ and the Church from creation to the end of the world, in its successive developments, but also the love between the Word and the human soul, and he sees here and there foreshadowed the relations between the two natures of Jesus, the divine and the human. The commentary is written with liveliness, but in its language and style it sometimes betrays the Eastern origin of the writer.
