APONIUS. - No biographical data are available for this writer; it can only be said that he was probably of Eastern origin and that he seems to have written in Rome in the 5th century (according to some, in the 6th), his Explanatio in Canticum Canticorum in 12 books, based on the text of the Vulgate. He too sees in that canticle not only the mystical union of Jesus Christ and the Church, from creation to the end of the world in its successive developments, but also the love between the Word and the human soul, and here and there he discerns the relationship between the two natures of Jesus, the divine and the human. The commentary is written with vividness, but in language and style it sometimes betrays the Eastern origin of the writer.
