APRINGIUS. - He was bishop of Pax Iulia (now Beja) in southern Lusitania (Portugal), at the time of Theudis, king of the Visigoths (531-48). His writings cannot have had wide circulation, if Isidore of Seville (ca. 470-536), asking (Ep. 25: PL. 80, 674) a friend of his to procure one of them for him, declared that he had been unable to read them. The work requested by Isidore was the Commentary on the Apocalypse of St. John, of which some parts have come down to us (v. Bibliothèque Patrologique, ed. by M. Férotin, I, Paris 1900; ed. A. C. Vega in Scriptores Ecclesiastici Hispano-Latini, fasc. x, Escorial 1941). Isidore (De viris illustribus, 30, ed. G. M. Dzialowski in the work Isidor und Ildefons als Literaturhistoriker, Münster in W. 1898, p. 53), naturally basing his judgment on the said Commentary, praises the eloquence, the erudition, the acumen and the style of A.
