APPELMANNS, GHEBRAERT. – Flemish hermit, who lived around 1250 to 1325, known only as a mystical writer for his original and profound commentary on the *Pater Noster* (*Glose op den Pater Noster*), in which he combines great theological learning with profound contemplative experience.
The Christological and Trinitarian framework, the precision of dogmatic concepts, and the evident methodological and didactic qualities reveal a strong scholastic formation, of Thomistic orientation, and suggest that the author taught theology before retiring from the world. Notable is his conception of mystical filiation, an extension of the filiation of grace, and his vision of God as the goal of this double filiation. From a linguistic standpoint, his pamphlet, discovered in manuscript by Fr. Reypens in 1927, is a gem of medieval Flemish literature, while demonstrating that by around 1300 scholastic mysticism was already widespread in the vernacular, prior to Eckhart.
