BARSOV, NIKOLAI IVANOVICH. — Renowned Russian dissident theologian, b. 1838, d. 1903. He was a master of theology and for 25 years a professor at the ecclesiastical academy in St. Petersburg. A member of various scholarly societies, he published several volumes of the Description of the Acts of the Archive of the Holy Synod and many articles and essays on religious and literary questions, especially on church history. Among his principal works is the History of Ancient Preaching (St. Petersburg 1865). In his doctrine of the Church he adhered to the theories taught by Aleksei Khomiakov, as he demonstrates in his dissertation Nova methodus in theologia (1869–70).
