BERTOLLO of BOBBIO, Saint. — Born of a noble Frankish pagan family, he entered the monastery of Luxeuil. With Abbot Attala he went to Bobbio, where in 627 he became abbot; he labored against Arianism, which had spread in Italy through the Lombards, and obtained from Pope Honorius, despite the machinations of Proco, bishop of Tortona, and Ariovald, king of the Lombards, the exemption of Bobbio (cf. the privilege: PL 80, 483-84; Jaffé-Wattenbach, 2017). He died on 19 Aug. 640. His feast is celebrated on 19 Aug. The life of B. was written by his disciple and traveling companion, Abbot Jonas of Bobbio (PL 87, 1061 sqq.).
