BILERBECK, Paul. - German exegete, b. 1853, d. at Frankfurt an der Oder, where he was a Protestant pastor, on 23 Dec. 1932. From 1906 he devoted his activity to the examination of the Talmud and the Midrashim in order to gather passages that, by similarity or contrast, serve to illuminate the relationships of form and doctrine between the teaching of Jesus and rabbinic tradition.
The work, which also bears the name of H. L. Strack as the first of the two authors, though his collaboration was minimal, was published in Munich (publisher Beck) in the years 1922–28, in 4 vols. (the 4th, in two tomes, contains the Excursus) under the title: Kommentar zum Neuen Testament aus Talmud und Midrasch. The extensive and highly erudite work comments on the individual New Testament books in order.
