Bilivert (Biliverti), Giovanni

BILIVERT (BILIVERTI), GIOVANNI. - Painter, b. according to some in Maastricht, but more probably in Florence to a Flemish father in 1576, d. in Florence in July 1644. He was a pupil of Ludovico Cardi, known as il Cigoli. Among his principal works on sacred subjects are remembered the Angel Refusing the Gifts of Tobias in the Pitti Gallery and the Chastity of Joseph in the Uffizi. Very well known is the canvas with Lucretia and Tarquin in the gallery of the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome. B. was an excellent draughtsman and at the same time had a very lively sense of chromatic values.
