BILLERBECK, PAUL. - German exegete, b. in 1853, d. in Frankfurt on the Oder, where he was a Protestant pastor, on 23 Dec. 1932. From 1906 he devoted his activity to the systematic examination of the Talmud and the Midrashim in order to gather from them the passages that, by similarity or contrast, serve to shed light on the relations of form and doctrine between the teaching of Jesus and rabbinic tradition.
The work, which also bears the name of H. L. Strack as the first of the two authors, although his collaboration was slight, was published in Munich (publisher Beck) in the years 1922-28, in 4 vols. (the 4th, in two tomes, contains the Excursuses) under the title: Kommentar zum Neuen Testament aus Talmud und Midrasch. The ample and highly erudite work comments in order on the individual New Testament books.
