BILLERBECK, PAUL. — German exegete, born in 1853, died in Frankfurt an der Oder, where he was a Protestant pastor, on 23 December 1932. From 1906 he devoted his activity to examining the Talmud and the Midhrášim, in order to collect the passages which, by similarity or contrast, serve to shed light on the relations of form and doctrine between the teaching of Jesus and rabbinic tradition.
The work, which also bears the name of H. L. Strack as the first of the two authors, although his collaboration was slight, appeared in Munich (publisher Beck) in the years 1922–28, in 4 vols. (the 4th, in two parts, contains the Excursivi), under the title: Kommentar zum Neuen Testament aus Talmud und Midrasch.
