BERRUGUETE, ALONSO - St. Jerome. Work by B. A. Burgos, Cathedral, chapel of the Constable.
BERRUGUETE, PEDRO AND ALONSO. - PEDRO, painter, b. at Paredes de Nava (Palencia) around 1450, d. before 1505. He trained in the Flemish tradition; then Piero della Francesca and Melozzo da Forlì influenced him during a stay in Urbino, where he worked together with Justus of Ghent for the duke of Urbino. By 1483 he had returned to Spain. Numerous paintings of sacred subjects by him survive today in the Prado Museum in Madrid, among them the Adoration of the Magi, St. Dominic and the Albigensians, St. Dominic of Guzmán, the Apparition of the Virgin to a Community, and an Auto da fé in the presence of St. Dominic of Guzmán, coming from the Sacristy of S. Tommaso in Avila.
ALONSO, sculptor, son of Pedro, b. at Paredes de Navas (Palencia) between 1486 and 1490, d. in 1561. After his father's death, around 1506 he came to Italy, where in Florence he copied the cartoon of the Battle of Cascina; in Rome he took part in a competition announced by Bramante for a copy of the Laocoön to be cast in bronze. Having returned to Spain, he left numerous works there. A. B. sought to reconcile the tendencies of traditional Spanish art with the spirit and forms of the Italian Renaissance. Particularly remembered of him are the mausoleum of Card. Tavera in Toledo, the Salinas tomb in Palencia, and some sculptures in polychrome wood. Also his work is the Holy Sepulchre of S. Girolamo in Granada, a work of great expressive force.
