**BERRIO-OCHOA, Valentín:** blessed. - Dominican martyr in Tonkin. One of the eight martyrs beatified by Pius X in 1906 (v. MARTIROLOGIO). Born on 14 Nov. 1827 at Elorrio in Biscay (Spain), he became a Dominican in 1854 and left for the Philippines in 1856, whence he went (1858) to the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin, of which he was made coadjutor bishop in that same year and then, following the capture and death sentence of the apostolic vicar García Sampedro, elected to succeed him in directing the vicariate. Caught up in the persecution in the neighboring vicariate of Eastern Tonkin, he was condemned to death and beheaded on 1 Nov. 1861 at Hai-Duong together Almató (v.).
