Bettiah, Former Apostolic Prefecture of

BETTIAH, EX PREFETTURA APOSTOLICA DI

BETTIAH, FORMER APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. - Apostolic prefecture erected in 1892, to whose territory, the following year, the entire kingdom of Nepal was annexed. The mission was entrusted to the Tyrolese Capuchins.

The origin of the missionary station at B. is due to the Capuchin Father Giuseppe (Benimi) da Gargnano (v.), who obtained freedom of preaching from the queen of B., whom he had treated in a serious illness: he directed that station for fifteen years. The prefecture, which lay outside the civil district of B., developed little, was suppressed in 1919 and incorporated into the new diocese of Patna (v.).
