BETTAZZI, RODOLFO. - Teacher, educator, apostle of action for the defense of morality, b. in Florence on Nov. 14, 1861, d. in Turin, on Jan. 26, 1941. A resident of Turin, where he was professor of mathematics at the Cavour Lyceum and at the Military Academy, he founded there the first League for Public Morality (1894), followed by similar associations in Naples, Treviso, Milan, etc., and then, from 1903, by Youth Unions (Rome, Florence, Padua, etc.) made up of secondary-school and university students.
The struggle against pornography and the vice industry was coordinated by several national congresses (Turin 1902; Milan 1926; Padua 1910; Naples 1914), which also brought about legislative measures. B., the animator of the movement, supported it with the struggle against the white slave trade, with the establishment of the Opera della protezione della giovane and of the Abolitionist Committee (for the abolition of the legalization of prostitution), and with the founding of the Nuova Crociata, a Catholic association against alcoholism (v.). A suggestive speaker and writer, he found in his wife Marianna Bondi the chosen mother of their numerous family and a collaborator in charitable action, the director of the magazine Matelda and a writer of educational stories. B.'s publications (chiefly lectures) all relate to the movement for public morality (v.) and for youth education that he stirred up, with particular regard to the education of purity. He also made a notable contribution to the development of Catholic Action.
