BONETTI, ANTONIO MARIA

BONETTI, ANTONIO MARIA. – Catholic publicist, born in Bologna in 1849, died in Rome on 7 August 1896. A volunteer in the Papal army from 1868 to 1870, he then devoted himself to journalism and teaching, contributing to the Osservatore romano and directing the Anti-Masonic Review (1894–96), organ of the Anti-Masonic Union (1894–1902), which he ardently promoted. The author of literary and polemical publications, he is effective in his writings—partly autobiographical—that evoke the military engagements in defense of the Pope’s temporal sovereignty (From Bagnorea to Mentana; Rome 1878; The Liberation of Rome, Siena 1889; Twenty-Five Years of Rome, Capital of Italy, 2 vols., Rome 1896).
