BARILLI, GIUSEPPE. – Polygraph, soldier, and teacher, b. at Budrio on 20 April 1812, d. at Bologna on 18 December 1894. In 1848, professor of hydraulics and mechanics at the University of Bologna, he fought that same year and in 1849 at Rome, where he was secretary of the assembly of the Roman Constituent Assembly and drafted the decree proclaiming the Republic. An exile in London, he returned to teaching in 1859 and fought in 1866 and 1867.
Under the pseudonym Quirico Filopanti he wrote works of scientific, philosophical, and historical popularization, inspired by Mazzinian pantheism and the most banal anticlericalism, with the disordered erudition of his restless spirit. Among them are Dio liberale, Dio esiste, Bibbia sociale; l'Universo, lezioni popolari di filosofia enciclopedica (the latter, also published under the pseudonym Quirico Filopanti, is on the Index, decree of 12 March 1875).
