BALBO, PROSPERO di VINADIO. - Son of Cesare, born in Paris on 5 March 1824, died in Turin on 2 March 1894, he left the military academy as a lieutenant of artillery and professor of mathematics at the officers' school. He took part in the war in 1848 and at Salionze, on 27 July, he valiantly checked the enemy advance, earning the gold medal. With the rank of captain he fought at the Sforzesca and at Novara, earning a silver medal; in the war of '59 he was attached to the siege park. He lived and worked in fervent communion of ideas and purposes with his father; and when, in 1860, he was called to be part of the troops that were to invade the Papal States, he resigned from the militia and from his offices, devoting himself entirely to the education of his children and to works of charity. On the occasion of the crisis of the policy of conciliation with Italy attempted by Leo XIII (1887) B. wrote a pamphlet:

Sulla Conciliazione tra il Regno d'Italia ed il Papa, (Turin 1887) in support of the civil principality of the pontiffs. Of his ardent religious apostolate he gave proof by arranging that on his tomb should be written: « Prospero Balbo di Gesù ».
