SPARAGANA, LUDOVICO. - Pontifical officer, b. at Monte S. Giovanni (Frosinone) on 30 March 1813, d. in Rome on 21 Aug. 1885.
A volunteer in the pontifical infantry on 25 Apr. 1831, he took part in the actions of that year and the following one, distinguishing himself later, with the rank of lieutenant, during the campaign of 1848. In 1859, when the Austrians left the Legations at the mercy of the revolution, the major
S. conducted himself as a loyal soldier, reaching Pesaro amid great difficulties with his entire battalion and helping to restore order in certain centers of the Marches.
Between May and Sept. 1860 he was part of the column of de Pimodan (v.), which routed Zambianchi's (v.) Garibaldians at Grotte di Castro, and he fought valiantly with the native troops at Castelfidardo. Placed afterward in command of the line infantry regiment, he contributed actively to the safeguarding and the recapture of the Viterbo area in the autumn of 1867. A lieutenant colonel commanding the Cacciatori battalion, on 20 Sept. 1870 he directed, with dash and expertise, the defense of the walls of Rome between Porta Portese and Porta S. Pancrazio, withdrawing thereafter to private life.
