RANDI, LORENZO ILARIONE. - Cardinal, b. at Bagnacavallo (Faenza) on 18 July 1818, d. at Rome on 20 Dec. 1887. Having entered the prelature in order to devote himself to a career in state administration, he distinguished himself brilliantly there, thanks also to the protection of Card. Antonelli, and he had the merit of setting in motion toward a rapid solution the arduous problem of opening a good railway network in the Papal State.
Extraordinary commissioner and apostolic delegate in the Marches and in the provinces of Pesaro and Urbino (1856), he knew how to thwart with skill and cunning, especially at Ancona, every revolutionary attempt in the fateful year 1859.
The work carried out in such difficult circumstances made easy his rise to the offices of vice-chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church, of governor of Rome and of director general of police (June 1866); to R. was thus due the safeguarding of public order in the crisis of autumn 1867, with the complete failure of the vast pseudo-insurrectional plots then hatched, while in the course of the extreme events of 1870 he remained faithful and vigilant at his post until the last hour of the morning of 20 Sept., transferring the most sensitive papers of the dicastery over which he presided.
Pius IX, in the Consistory of 15 March 1875, created him cardinal in petto and published him on the following 17 Sept. with the deaconal title of S. Maria in Cosmedin.
A skilled and profound devotee of numismatics, he spent his last years at Palazzo Taverna completing that precious collection of his of pontifical coins and medals which, acquired by Leo XIII in 1901, renewed the Numismatic Cabinet of the VaticanLibrary, whose collections had already been in large part dispersed in the course of the Jacobin and Napoleonic occupations.
