RESTA DI SOGLIANO, FILIPPO. - Papal general, b. of a noble family at Tagliacozzo in Oct. 1777, d. there on 20 Nov. 1853.
Admitted at the age of fourteen (1791) into the papal army, he fought as a second lieutenant on the Senio against the French (Feb. 1797), being wounded and earning promotion to captain. He refused to serve the Republic (1798-1800) and the Empire (1808-14) and for this suffered imprisonment and exile. A colonel in 1816, he collaborated in the reorganization of the armed forces upon the departure of the Austrians from the Romagna (1817). He then passed to the general staff and in 1830 became brigadier general and supreme commander. In the course of the disturbances of Feb. 1831, after having secured quiet in Rome, he confronted with about 4000 men the column of Sercognani in the territory of Corese and succeeded in dispersing it with notable losses, thereby saving the capital. He then concentrated at Rimini the forces that on 20 Jan. 1832 defeated near Cesena (v.) the surviving revolutionaries. A lieutenant general in 1847, he closed his career with the rank of honorary captain general granted by Pius IX.
