RANIERO GIORDANI da PISA. - Dominican theologian, b. at Rivalto, d. at Pisa in 1348. He studied in Paris, taught at Pisa and in other convents of his Order.

An assiduous scholar and a good connoisseur of St. Thomas, he wrote the Pantheologia, which is the oldest dictionary of theology. The material is set out in alphabetical order; gathered from various writers, it nevertheless has a doctrinal unity thanks to the author's intelligent elaboration. The work, begun in 1331, is of evident Thomist inspiration; the influence of St. Bonaventure and of Alexander of Hales is also notable. It soon enjoyed wide circulation; the 1st known ed. is that of Nuremberg of 1474 with the title: Summa et nucleus theologiae, followed by many others (Mainz 1477, Nuremberg 1486, Cologne 1486, Lyon 1519, etc.). Two opuscules are also attributed to him: De fortuna and De sortibus.
