RAZZI, SERAFINO. — Dominican historian, born at Marradi in Mugello on 13 Dec. 1531, died at Florence on 8 Aug. 1611. He entered the Dominican Order at Florence in the convent of S. Marco (28 June 1549), studied at Perugia and Florence, and taught in various cities (1560–74). He served as prior in several convents (1574–82) and as regent of studies at Perugia from 1582 to 1587. In 1587 he was sent to Dalmatia as vicar general to restore regular observance in the convents of that Dominican congregation. Upon his return to Italy, he held other offices.
He was especially notable as an elegant hagiographer. His works include: *Vita de sancti, beati e venerabili del S. Ordine dei Predicatori* (Florence 1577; 2nd ed. with additional lives, 1588; Lucca 1596; Palermo 1605; French trans. Paris 1616); *Vita della b. Osanna da Cattaro* (Florence 1592); *Vita della serva di Dio Caterina de’ Ricci* (Lucca 1594); *Vita del glorioso s. Zacinto confessore* (Florence 1596); *Historia degli homini illustri del S. Ord. dei Predicatori* (1596). He also left in manuscript sermons, philosophical and theological works, writings on Sacred Scripture, various lives of saints, the history of the monastery of S. Vincenzo at Prato, and a life of Girolamo Savonarola.
