RAZZI, SILVANO. - Humanist and hagiographer of the Camaldolese Order, brother of Serafino, born at Marradi in the Mugello region in 1527, died in Florence on 15 October 1611. A devoted pupil of the poet and historian Benedetto Varchi, he wrote tragedies that earned him praise. Having become a Camaldolese monk at Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, he devoted himself assiduously to sacred studies.
He served as Visitor General, Abbot of Santa Maria in Gradi in Arezzo, and the first Abbot (a title succeeding the ancient one of Prior) of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. During his tenure, the monastery was enriched with works of art and regained renown in the field of learning. A rumor circulated that, to please his friends, R. had deprived the monastery of many illuminated codices from the 15th century.
He wrote: *Raccolta di orazioni a Cristo e alla beatissimale Madre Maria* (1656); *I miracoli della gloriosa Vergine Maria* (1599); *Corona del Signore in forma di orazioni* (1592); *Vite dei santi e beati dell’Ordine di Camaldoli* (1600); *Quadragesimale ovvero meditazioni per ciascun giorno di Quaresima* (1607); other ascetical and hagiographical works remained unpublished and may have been lost.
