STEPHEN of DIE, Saint. — Carthusian, born c. 1155 at Lyon from the noble family of Châtillon-les-Dombes.
He became a religious in the Carthusian monastery of Portes (diocese of Belley), where he led an extremely austere life, consoled by heavenly visions, and performed many miracles. Elected prior in 1196, in 1203 he was elected bishop of Die, where he died on 7 September 1208. Even during his lifetime he was venerated as a saint by the people;
