STEPHEN of DIE, saint. - Carthusian, born c. 1155 in Lyon into the noble family of Chatillon-les-Dombes.

He became a religious in the Charterhouse of Portes (diocese of Belley), where he led an extremely austere life, comforted by heavenly visions and performed many miracles. Elected prior in 1196, in 1203 he was elected bishop of Die, where he died on 7 September 1208. Even during his lifetime, he was venerated as a saint by the people.

His successors in the episcopal see had requested his canonization, but his cult was only approved in 1904 (Acta Sanctae Sedis, 36 [1904], p. 425). Feast day: 7 September.
