STEPHEN OF DIE, Saint. - Carthusian, b. ca. 1155 in Lyon from the noble family of the Chatillon-les-Dombes.

He became a religious in the charterhouse of Portes (diocese of Belley), where he led a most austere life, comforted by heavenly visions, and worked many wonders. Elected prior in 1196, in 1203 he was elected bishop of Die, where he d. on 7 Sept. 1208. Even while alive he was venerated as a saint by the people; his successors in the episcopal see had requested his canonization, but his cult was approved only in 1904 (Acta Sanctae Sedis, 36 [1904], p. 425). Feast on September 7.
