VERACI, CROCIPISSA. - Camaldolese mystic of the monastery of Pratovecchio (diocese of Fiesole), b. 18 Oct. 1749 in Firenze, d. there 16 Feb. 1822.
She became a nun at the age of 20 and until 1782 led a most depraved life, going so far as to give, by a contract written in her own blood, soul and body to the devil. She converted at the age of 33; and after 10 years of harsh penances she received the stigmata of the Passion together with the crown of thorns, which she bore until her death. She had continual visions, the gift of prophecy, bilocation, and scrutiny of hearts. In mystical prayer she attained spiritual espousal and received from Jesus a golden ring, which she habitually wore. These mystical manifestations were examined with critical rigor by the competent authorities, as may be seen from the correspondence preserved in its entirety in the Archive of her monastery.
