STEPHEN THE YOUNGER, Saint. - Born in Constantinople in 715, he was left at the age of 15 in the monastery of St. Auxentius near Chalcedon during the iconoclastic persecution. After his father’s death, Stephen distributed his ample patrimony to the poor. At the age of thirty he became hegumen of the monastery, which he governed with holy austerity. Later he resigned his office and lived as a hermit.
Stephen was arrested by order of Constantine Copronymus, who vainly tried to secure his adhesion to the iconoclastic council of 754. He was later denounced for having admitted a new novice (an imperial spy) in violation of the imperial decree. His monastery was burned, and he was condemned by an iconoclastic episcopal tribunal and exiled to Chrysopolis near Constantinople. He denied ecumenical authority to the synod from which Rome and the other patriarchates were absent. He was then exiled to the island of Proconnesus, but two years later transferred to the prisons of Constantinople. Brought again before the Emperor, he was dragged through the streets of the city and finally finished off with a cudgel.
The biography of Stephen written forty-two years later by Stephen the Deacon (PG 100, 1069-1185) is the only reliable source and contains many details about the life of monks, the most strenuous defenders of orthodoxy. The Latins at the Council of Florence cited words of Stephen in favor of the primacy of the Pope.
