STEPHEN OF BEAUGÉ (de Balgiaco). - Bishop of Autun from 1112 to 1136, d. at Cluny in 1139, where, having left the diocese, he had retired.

Peter the Venerable (v.), who assisted him at the moment of death, gives a flattering eulogy of him (Epistolarum, I. V., 6: PL 189, 390-91). The well-known De Sacramento altaris et de iis, quae ad varios Ecclesiae ministros ab inferioribus usque ad episcopum pertinent (PL 172, 1271-1308) is not his, but that of his successor Stephen II (cf. D. van den Eynde, Le tractatus « De sacramento altaris » faussement attribué à Etienne de Beaugé, in Rech. de Théol. anc. et méd., 19 [1952], pp. 225-43), an interesting liturgical-ascetic explanation of the Mass, dependent on Odo of Cambrai (v.), Amalarius of Metz (v.) and Ivo of Chartres (v.), which contains a clear affirmation of the oblatio of the faithful in the sacrifice (coll. 1288-1289).
