STEFANO di BEAUGÉ (de BALGIACO). - Bishop of Autun from 1112 to 1136, died at Cluny in 1139, where, having resigned the diocese, he had withdrawn.
Pietro il Venerabile (v.), who assisted him at the moment of death, gives him flattering praise (Epistolarum, I. V., 6: PL 189, 390-91). The well-known De Sacramento altaris et de iis, quae ad varios Ecclesiae ministros ab inferioribus usque ad episcopum pertinent (PL 172, 1271-1308), an interesting liturgical-ascetical explanation of the Mass, Oddone di Cambrai (v.), Amalario di Metz (v.), Ivo di Chartres (v.), which contains a clear affirmation of the oblatio of the faithful in the sacrifice (cols. 1288-1289), is not by him but by his successor Stefano II (cf.
