At the age of twenty he entered the hermitage of Monte Corona, taking the name Mariano on Dec. 8, 1795. He discharged various offices with spirit and delicacy. In 1809 he was elected superior, and in that role he brought his virtues to heroic degree. In humility and prayer, he was a father to all, forgetful of himself in order to anticipate the needs of his subjects, and munificent toward the poor. At the announcement of his death, Pius IX exclaimed: "Let us take comfort; we have another who prays for us."
