MARIANO da FERMO. – Camaldolese ascetic, born on 8 December 1775 at Carassai in the Piceno, died on 19 September 1854.
At the age of twenty he entered the hermitage of Monte Corona, taking the name Mariano there on 8 December 1795. He discharged various offices with spirit and tact. In 1809 he was elected major, and in this capacity caused his virtues to shine forth in heroic degree. In humility and prayer, he was the father of all, forgetful of himself in anticipating the needs of his subjects, and exceedingly generous toward the poor. On hearing of his death, Pius IX exclaimed: “Let us be comforted; we have another who prays for us.”
