Mariano da Fermo

MARIANO DA FERMO. - Camaldolese ascetic, b. 8 Dec. 1775 at Carassai in the Piceno, d. 19 Sept. 1854.

At the age of twenty he entered the hermitage of Monte Corona, taking there the name Mariano on 8 Dec. 1795. He discharged various offices with spirit and delicacy. In 1809 he was elected major, and in that mission he made his virtues shine forth to a heroic degree. In humility and prayer he was a father to all, forgetful of himself in order to forestall the needs of his subjects, and generously munificent toward the poor. On the announcement of his death Pius IX exclaimed: "Let us take comfort, we have another who prays for us."
