BAGNACAVALLO. - A small town in the province of Ravenna; among its more notable religious monuments are to be counted the church of St. Michael (15th-century apse decorated with terracottas, 17th-century choir stalls and wooden altar, and paintings by Bartolomeo Ramenghi known as il Bagnacavallo) and that of St. Francis, rebuilt in 1796 (stuccoes and fine wrought iron). Also of interest are some houses of the 15th-17th centuries.
The nearby parish church of St. Peter in Silvia is one of the most interesting medieval buildings in the Ravenna territory. Recorded in documents as early as the 8th century, it has three naves divided by pillars lacking base and capital. Its construction is generally attributed to the 6th century, but some historians, following Galassi, hold it, more reasonably, to be of the 7th. The small double-splayed windows of the minor naves are among the oldest examples of the kind. There are also preserved in it an ancient altar and the remains of an 8th-century ciborium, a panel by Bagnacavallo and frescoes of the first half of the 14th century attributed to Giuliano da Rimini or, by more recent criticism, to Francesco Pelosio. - See Pl.
