BELLI, VALERIO. - Engraver of gems and medallist, b. in 1468 at Vicenza (for which reason he was called Valerio Vicentino), d. there in 1546, after a long stay in Rome and in Venice.
His stay in Rome had a great influence on him, since it allowed him to free himself from the fifteenth-century taste for perspective (rock crystal cross of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London) and to approach instead a mannered Renaissance decorativism. Besides various works of carving, in crystal and in hardstones, derived from artists of the time and now lost, besides numerous struck medals, from 1525 to 1532 he worked on a small silver casket with crystal carvings, commissioned from him by Clement VII, which represents his masterpiece, for its fine and accurate execution and for the skillful movement of masses (Florence, Palazzo Pitti).
