BRICARELLI, Carlo. - Jesuit, born in Turin on 1 October 1857, died in Rome on 25 June 1931. Having graduated in advanced mathematics at the University of Turin, he soon after entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Chieri (1879). For twenty years he taught physical and mathematical sciences in the Colleges of Monaco and Turin and in the seminary of the Society in Chieri. In 1899 he was called to Rome to become a member of the editorial staff of La Civiltà Cattolica. He particularly dealt with topics concerning science and sacred art. He was professor at the Gregorian University and consultant to the Pontifical Central Commission for Sacred Art.

Bricarelli was always an apostle of youth, and this earned him, during the Modernist controversies, to be personally subjected to fierce attacks: the famous “Vercesi trial” ended with the full vindication of the exemplary priest (cf. *Il segreto di confessione ai tribunali di Roma.
