CARLO LUIGI BURNOZO DEL SIGNORE. —
Archbishop of Turin, b. Vercelli 23 Oct 1731,
d. there 22 Oct 1806. He served as vicar general in Vercelli,
then became bishop of Acqui (1784), of Novara
(1791), and archbishop of Turin (1797). He was a friend of
Carlo Emanuele IV, but upon the latter’s fall (Dec 1798)
B. bowed with excessive and perhaps insincere enthusiasm
to the new institutions. In 1802 he went to Paris
to prevent a drastic reduction in the number of bishops.
Since Napoleon held him in low esteem for his loyalty to the king,
he asked and obtained permission to resign his see and retired to Vercelli
(1805), where he died.
He was the first to publish the works of Attone, bishop
of Vercelli: Attonis sanctae Vercellarum ecclesiae episcopi
(924) opera ad authoropatri Vercellensis fidem nunc primum
exacta praefatione et commentariis illustrata a d. C. B. del
S. (Vercelli 1768, reprinted in PL 134, 27-834), dedicated
to Prince Vittorio Amedeo.
