BURRIEL, ANDRÉS MARCO

BURRIEL, ANDRÉS MARCO. — Spanish Jesuit,
b. at Buenache de Alarcón in 1719, d. there in 1762.
He taught rhetoric and philosophy in the colleges of the Society
and intended to depart for California to fulfill a vow, when instead he was called to the archive of the cathedral of Toledo (1789).
This appointment afforded him the opportunity to become a distinguished
paleographer and to write the highly esteemed *Paleografía española*,
which contains all the modes of writing that have existed in Spain, etc.
(Madrid 1758); he transcribed about 2,000 documents, amassed an abundant
harvest of information, and published works of great value on various
subjects (lives of kings, the Order of the Golden Fleece, the conquest
of America, archaeology, liturgy, etc.). He is cited among the scholars
whose works serve as linguistic authorities. Of particular interest is his
epistolary correspondence with the learned men of his time.
