BURONZO DEL SIGNORE, CARLO LUIGI. - Archbishop of Turin, b. at Vercelli on 23 Oct. 1731, d. there on 22 Oct. 1806. He was vicar general at Vercelli, then became bishop of Acqui (1784), of Novara (1791), and archbishop of Turin (1797). He was a friend of Carlo Emanuele IV, but at his fall (Dec. 1798), B. accommodated himself, with excessive and perhaps insincere enthusiasm, to the new institutions. In 1802 he went to Paris in order to prevent the number of bishoprics from being reduced too greatly. Since Napoleon held him in low regard because of his attachment to the king, he requested and obtained permission to resign his bishopric and retired to Vercelli (1805), where he died.
He was the first to publish the works of Atto, bishop of Vercelli: Attonis sanctae Vercellorum ecclesiae episcopi (924) opera ad autographi Vercellensis fidem nunc primum exacta praefatione et commentariis illustrata a d. C. B. del S. (Vercelli 1768, reproduced in PL 134, 27-834), dedicated to Prince Vittorio Amedeo.
